Helium leak detection using a helium mass spectrometer leak detector is the most sensitive of the various leak detecting methods, able to detect leaks smaller than 1E-9 cc/sec. A properly calibrated helium leak detector makes it possible to accurately quantify a leak, simplifying part acceptance protocol.
A calibrated helium leak standard is used to calibrate a leak detector by supplying a known leak rate to which the detector reading can be corrected. The leak rate of the leak standard is normally designated to be at or near the leak reject limit of the part being tested.
